Floral Still Life - Portland, Maine
Capturing just a flower is very intimidating. There is so much beauty in every little aspect and trying to capture that beauty for the viewer to not only see, but to feel through the photograph is what I strive to capture every time.
When the pandemic started I started to search for things to photograph in and around my home here in Portland, Maine. I turned to flowers. This tulip was growing outside and I loved the colors. The yellow, the black, the deep red, they all told a story. I wanted to capture it like a painting so I focused on a long exposure moving the light around the flower to get the effect I was looking for.
This is one of my first and favorite photos from the early pandemic days.
With the holidays around the corner, I wanted to touch on some of my favorite photography books. I love that books can help give us a glimpse of what other photographer’s works are/were, what they were thinking when making an image, and in turn, give one inspiration.
Annie Leibovitz at Work - A great book that dives into behind the scenes of her work and other photographer’s work.
Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective - A great book covering Imogen’s work. My favorite photos are, of course, her flower work.
Sheila Metzner: From Life - Confession this is on my own wish list this year. I got a few moments to browse through it at a local bookstore and I knew I had to have it. Sheila’s work spans from fashion to intimate portraits of her family.
These would be great gift ideas from a budding photographer to a well-seasoned one.
Happy Holidays!
